HAMSAT REPORT ON 07.05.2005 FROM VU2HFR
QTH CALCUTTA / 22.5577 N / 88.3572 E / LOC : NL42en
TIME OF PASS : 16:05 UTC - 16:18 UTC / PEAK ELEVATION : 74 DEGREES
EQUIPMENT : FT-50RD H.T. (5 WATTS) & ARROW 3EL / 7EL HAND HELD YAGI
UPLINK : 435.250 MHz DOWNLINK : 145.900 MHz MODE : FM
STATIONS HEARD REPORT SENT REPORT RCVD
9W2QC 57
STATIONS WORKED
VU2POP 59 55
VU2WMY 59 55
Remarks : This was a very good pass over Calcutta. Pop, VU2POP was
the strongest station heard causing full quieting with 59+ signals.
At times there was interference which could be caused by other
stations on nearby frequencies on the transponder. Mani, VU2WMY
signals were strong but audio was a bit distorted which could be due
to his uplink / downlink frequency on the transponder being a few
KHz off from where I had tuned to. Infact there semed to be a lot of
stations whose uplink frequencies were not identical causing the
frequency to be jammed at times.
Hamsat is primarily a CW / SSB satellite. However in VU land very
few of us possess multimode satellite ready rigs and if Amsat India
allows us to use FM, it would enable us to work this satellite. Only
some guidelines for FM operation regarding ERP on TX / Uplink &
Downlink frequency combination for FM with doppler shift
compensation would be welcome. I was uplinking on 435.250 MHz and
monitoring on 145.900 MHz. Local hams from Calcutta monitoring my
signals reported that my signals were much better on 145.905 MHz.
Since Hamsat has a linear inverting transponder which is not
primarily meant for FM use some improvisation may be necessary to be
on the correct uplink / downlink frequency. My H.T. doesnot have
simultaneous dual receive.
Pop, since you have been evaluating the satellite please provide
some guidelines on FM use regarding use of power and uplink /
downlink frequencies with doppler compensation. If all of us VU hams
who wish to work Hamsat on FM follow the Amsat India guidelines then
all of us would be able to work this wonderful new bird from India
and enjoy the thrill of Satellite communication for years to come
without causing QRM to other users.

Friends,
I am pleased to report my first SWL report of upto S2 on HAMSAT just
a few minutes ago. It was HAMSAT's orbit # 37 passing over my QTH at
around 23:16 IST / 17:46 Z at an elevation of 35.8 degrees.
After an unsuccessful attempt on orbit # 36 at 16:10z (10.3 degree
elevation) I had put the radio on "alert" mode, left it on 145.9 and
went to bed as was pretty tired to stay awake. The radio woke me up
upon receiving signals, and I was thrilled to hear VU2POP, VU2WMY,
VU2GUR, VU2RMS etc on FM. It lasted for couple of minutes after
which it faded. I was up to about an additional 15kcs when I last
copied it.
POP was shouting "Give every one a chance yaaar" :)
I am enough thrilled to compell me to buy a radio that will enable
me to work our own HAMSAT!!
Hearty Congratulations to the AMSAT INDIA team and thank you very
much !!

Hi,
I have heard HamSat for the first time this
morning, 7.05.2005 around 02:25. There was a station calling CQ, but I
am not sure of the callsign. It sounded like VK6..H (most likely VK6XH)
Later on tonight we had more stations active
at 14:23Z pass.
I heard strong signals of VK3KOS working
VK6XH, then VK6APH, then VK6XH chatting to VK6APH and worked them all
afterwards as well.
I was using only dual band vertical and
around 50 watts output power.
So not much is required to work via HamSat.
Thank you to all involved, who made it
possible, for flying this nice new bird- HamSat..

Hamsat CW carrier heard here at IO92NL at 1247 utc. I heard the continuous
carrier doppler from 145.940 to 145.934 from the Indian beacon but was unable to
hear
anything of the Dutch beacon on 145.860 and downwards.
I used the Amsat keps and my trusty AOR scanner AR8000 with a 9 ele XY RHCP.
Subjectively the signal seemed weaker than the Japanese CUBESATS and I could not
capture the doppler in SPECTRAN although I could hear it.
Please can you tell me how to get a QSL card or sticker? I'd be happy to send
IRC dollar or rupee notes.

HAMSAT passed West Malaysia with a maximum elevation of 52 degrees at 0355
UTC, 7 May 2005.
Excellent signals were heard from the beacon at 145.936 MHz +/- and even
worked VU2POP. He was the 2nd station and the 1st DX station I worked on
HAMSAT. I also understood from VU2POP that I was the first DX station that
he had worked. Thank you very much for the fine contact, Pop. Frequencies
were 435.250 MHz +/- uplink and 145.900 MHz +/- downlink in FM mode. Very
strong signals heard and VU2POP was peaking to 59 over 20 db!!!
Setup here is a Yaesu FT-847, 10 element Yagi for 2M feeded with RG-213
coaxial cable, 11 element Quad for 70 cm feeded with Belden 9913 coaxial
cable, all vertically polarized. No preamp for the 2M band yet but I guess
with the good signals of HAMSAT this isn't needed too. Only about 5-10
watts of power depending on the elevation is needed to work HAMSAT from my
QTH.
Thank you and good luck to AMSAT-INDIA and the HAMSAT team for making this
satellite a success.

Hamsat report - 5 May 1940 UTC
Good signals over western North America.
Made my first Hamsat QSO with W7TYN CN85 at
1940 UTC. My uplink power was approximately
10 Watts, LSB, using 10 x 10 crossed Yagi on
az/el mount. Received signal was up to S-7
to S-9 using horizontally polarized 2 meter
Yagi, steerable in azimuth only.
The received signals were very stable with
no trace of FMing or other abnormalities.
I switched uplink between RHCP and LHCP and
could not conclusively find there was a
consistent difference. At times, one
polarity would seemed favored, but later in
the pass it was not.
Congratulations on a very fine satellite!
